Under par Broomhill wins with solitary goal
By William Newell
Broomhill 1, Caledon 0
Despite a below-par performance, Broomhill still managed a close victory over Caledon on Saturday.
Being missing 5 regulars they were not at their best, but a solitary goal saw the match finish in their favour.
It was a rather ‘scrappy’ affair although Broomhill started in positive form and both Michael Smyth and Ian Mulholland squandered early chances.
20 minutes into the game a ball in the box was handled by a Caledon opponent and the home side had the advantage of a penalty – duly despatched by Ian Mulholland for the only goal of the day.
For some time after this the visitors had Broomhill pinned within their own half as they played some excellent football but with no reward.
The second half was pretty even although neither team made any headway with both defences well on top.
Caledon had the edge but were denied on several occasions by Broomhill goalkeeper, Gary McCoo.
At the other end Johnny Forde had a goal bound effort well saved before the final whistle blew in favour of
Broomhill although really a draw would have been a fairer reflection of play.
Best for Broomhill were Gary Mulholland and Johnny Forde.
