Late goals force Broomhill into draw with Mavericks

Broomhill 1, Queen’s Mavericks 1
TWO late goals, both scored within minutes of the final whistle, forced Broomhill into a draw against Belfast visitors, Queen’s Mavericks on Saturday.
The strengthened Queen’s side began well with Broomhill finding it difficult to get out of their own half. They had the majority of play and knocked the ball about plenty but made nothing of all their chances.
Eventually Broomhill found their feet and got into the swing of the game but almost found themselves 1 nil down when a ball was lobbed over the bar.
At the home side, Johnny Forde with the goalkeeper well beaten, ended up in the side netting and the game entered the break on a scoreless draw.
The second half began as a more evenly contested fixture with play very competitive. At this stage Broomhill had the edge but were denied when Michael Smyth headed over the bar. Ian Mulholland’s goal-bound shot also brought the best out of the Belfast ‘keeper.
All the action happened in the closing minutes of the game and began when a shot from Johnny Forde was initially saved by the goalkeeper. Jason Loney was on hand however and made no mistake with the rebound for the first goal of the day.
In their exuberance Broomhill momentarily lost concentration and straight from kick off, Queens took the ball up the field to equalise. While Broomhill were denied an outright victory, it could be said that a draw was actually a fair reflection of play. Best among the home ranks was Lee Winter.
